Corporate Team Building Ideas: Inside Envisage’s Gladiator-Inspired Office Challenge
Every so often, you get a win that deserves more than just a quick “well done” and moving on to the next thing.
For us, securing work on the Gladiators Experience at the NEC Birmingham was one of those moments.
So, we did what felt right… we celebrated it. Properly.
Not with a formal sit-down or speeches but by bringing the team together and doing something a bit different. Something that reflected the energy of the project, but on a much smaller (and much safer) scale.
That’s how Gladiator Day came about.
A Simple Idea, Get Everyone Together
The thinking behind it wasn’t complicated.
We spend a lot of time focused on delivery for clients, logistics, making things happen. And while that’s what we’re here to do, it’s easy to forget to pause and recognise the people behind it all.
This was a chance to do exactly that.
No pressure. No targets. Just getting everyone together, having a laugh, and marking a moment we’re genuinely proud of as a business.
Because wins like this don’t happen by accident they’re built on the effort of the whole team.
So… What Did We Actually Do?
In short we ran our own version of Gladiators. In reality it was slightly less “prime time TV” and slightly more “office chaos”.
We split into teams (very competitively named, of course), and worked through a series of challenges that required very little skill… but a surprising amount of effort.
There was:
- Rock, Paper, Scissors which somehow escalated quickly
- Balance challenges that exposed extremely strong legs
- Office chair racing (we’ll leave that one with health & safety)
- And the plank… which didn’t do anyone any favours
It didn’t take long for people to realise two things: Confidence and fitness are not the same thing
Some of us haven’t stretched since 2007
But none of that mattered.
What mattered was the noise, the energy, and the way people got involved whether they were competing, cheering people on, or just enjoying watching it all unfold.

What Stood out
The best part of the day wasn’t the games themselves it was everything around them.
- People backing each other.
- Laughing at themselves.
- Getting stuck in, regardless of how it might look.
You had people stepping forward who wouldn’t normally put themselves in that position. Others encouraging teammates they don’t usually work alongside day-to-day.
That kind of thing doesn’t happen by accident.
It comes from having a team that feels comfortable, supported, and part of something.
And days like this only strengthen that.
Why Team Building Matters (Even If It Just Looks Like Fun)
From the outside, it probably just looked like a group of people messing about in the office.
And to be fair… it was.
But it’s also more than that.
When people have the chance to connect outside of their usual roles, it changes how they work together afterwards. Communication becomes easier. Trust builds naturally. There’s a different level of understanding.
You can’t force that in a meeting room but you can create the conditions for it.
That’s what this day did.
A Quick Reality Check
We’ll be honest it also reminded us that we’re not quite ready for the actual arena.
Balance wasn’t as strong as expected.
Stamina varied.
And the plank exposed absolutely everyone.
So yes, we’ll leave Hang Tough and The Eliminator to the professionals.
If you need a reminder of what the real thing looks like, this says it all:

Safe to say… we’ve got a bit of work to do before we sign up for that.
The Bigger Picture
This day came off the back of something we’re genuinely excited about working on the Gladiators Experience at the NEC Birmingham.
It’s a brilliant, high-energy project, and exactly the kind of thing we love being involved in.
But what made celebrating it worthwhile wasn’t just the project itself it was recognising the team behind it.
Because at the end of the day, that’s what everything comes back to.
What We Took From the Team Building Day
No big lessons. No overthinking it.
Just a few simple takeaways:
- It’s worth stopping to celebrate the wins
- Time together matters more than you think
- Team spirit isn’t built in meetings
- And stretching probably should be part of the plan next time
Gladiator Day wasn’t about performance, or competition, or doing anything particularly impressive.
It was about the Envisage team.
Taking a moment to step back, enjoy it, and remind ourselves why we do what we do and who we do it with.
And if that involved a bit of chaos, a lot of laughing, and a few sore muscles the next day… then it did exactly what it was meant to do.
