Ideas and Tips to Keep Your Cool When Working Outside

working outside top tipsAlmost everyone loves working outside in the Summer, but it does have its disadvantages during hot weather. It is important to know how to work safely in hot weather and how to prevent heat stress and heat stroke, this is when the body can no longer control its temperature.

Because Envisage Agency cares about our lovely staff that are working hard representing us, we have put together the following top tips to help you when working outdoors.

Our Top Ten Tips to Keep Cool When Working in Hot Weather

1. Stay hydrated – ideally you should drink about 8 glasses of water a day (one glass = 8 ounces or 1 cup)
2. Try to avoid drinks that are dehydrating such as tea, coffee alcohol and caffeinated soft drinks
3. Wear the right clothes. – make sure they are loose-fitting, lightweight, don’t wear dark colours and wear a hat. A change of clothing is a good idea too
4. Work at an even pace. – make sure you know your own limits. Take five when you need too and in a shaded area
5. Move your working areas – a lot of our work is on stands or working in a specific location, where possible move to the shade or ask the client to provide some. Simply put, avoid working in the direct sun.
6. Take a cloth or flannel to work – dampen a cloth to wipe down your face and neck
7. Use Sunscreen – always have this with you if working outside.
8. Sweating is actually a good sign – sweating shows that your body is functioning like it should as it tries to reduce its temperature. If you suddenly stop sweating it could be a sign for heatstroke.
9. Get your spritzing on – You can use water from your bottle and dribble it on the back of your neck so do this throughout the day.If you can get your hands on some ice or very cold water put this on your wrists and just below your palm. This part of your body is critical to lowering your heat
10. Eat smaller meals and snacks. Eat things like fruit which are higher in fibre and natural juice. Avoid heavy meals, especially protein-rich meats. Your body creates more metabolic heat if it’s breaking down heavy foods so smaller meals and snacks are the way to go
