Case Study: Crowd Talent for the Turbo Tango Launch, Manchester

The Project

A product launch only works if the room feels alive from the first minute, and that was exactly the brief for the Turbo Tango launch in Manchester. Turbo Tango first appeared in 2011 as an aerosol powered can that turned Tango into a foamy, edible spray, and it built a genuine cult following among Millennials before disappearing from shelves. Years of online petitions and social media nostalgia later, Tango brought it back for an ultra-limited run of just 2,000 cans, giving longtime fans a chance to relive it and introducing a new generation to a piece of 2010s drink culture they had only ever heard about online.

The very first opportunity to get hold of a can came at a Turbo Tango Lab Party at Gorilla in Manchester, and Coolr Ltd needed fifty people who could play the part of the public turning up to be among the first through the door. We supplied the crowd talent to make that happen. It is a role that sounds simple on paper but takes real energy to pull off well, since the whole atmosphere of a launch event rests on how convincing and enthusiastic that first wave of the crowd feels.

Our Approach

Getting the casting right mattered as much as the numbers. We supplied a crowd of twenty-five male and twenty-five female staff each day, aged between eighteen and thirty, with a genuine mix of race represented across the group, so our team reflected Tango’s real audience rather than standing out as a separate group. Everyone came dressed in casual clothing of their own choosing, avoiding obviously branded pieces, so nothing pulled focus from the product itself or looked staged on camera.

Their job was never to replace the public, it was to enhance them. Our team were there to get the flow started, queueing early, moving through the venue with visible enthusiasm and giving genuine attendees something to feed off as the room filled up. They joined the queue outside, made their way into the venue and threw themselves into the activations on offer, taking on the Batak reaction game, having a go on the claw grabber, striking poses on the 360 glambot and dancing along to the DJ. Tasting the new Turbo Tango cans was part of the experience too, giving the room a natural reason to gather, react and talk to each other exactly as genuine guests would. That early energy matters more than people realise, because a launch event lives or dies in its first twenty minutes, and a crowd that arrives ready to enjoy itself gives everyone else permission to do the same.

With filming and photography being used for Tango’s own social channels, every one of our team understood they were part of the content itself, and briefed accordingly, so their energy in front of camera needed to feel real rather than performed. Staff were briefed ahead of the event on the flow of the day, the activations they would be moving through and the tone Tango wanted the launch to carry, but once inside the venue the aim was always for them to blend into the crowd and lift it, not stand apart from it.

The Result

The Turbo Tango launch had the atmosphere Coolr Ltd was looking for from the moment the doors opened, with a queue outside, a lively room inside and every activation getting genuine use throughout the event. A crowd hire of fifty staff across a demographic mix that matched Tango’s audience helped set the tone early, and the footage and photography captured for the brand’s social channels showed a launch that looked exactly like what it was meant to be, a nostalgic product genuinely landing with the people it was made for, old fans and new ones alike.

For Coolr Ltd, that meant an event that delivered the content and the energy the campaign needed, without any of the flat patches or slow starts that can undermine a launch of this kind. For our team, it was another reminder of what crowd talent work does best, helping a brand’s own crowd find its feet quickly, and enjoy itself once it does.
