Hiring a crowd for a PR Stunt

Sending 100 Lady Gagas to protest outside the Houses of Parliament was the eye-catching stunt created to help the SAVE Britain’s Heritage campaign for the historic Smithfield Market site.

A livestock market existed at Smithfield, in the City of London for over 800 years, occupying three large listed buildings. In recent years, there had been a call for the wholesale market to be moved out of the City of London, making it more accessible and providing more extensive facilities. The question immediate arose as to the future of the historic buildings.

Demolition and replacing with modern office blocks was inevitably one of the possibilities being suggested. Campaigners set out to prevent this.

A dramatic stunt was sought which would capture attention, and highlight the alternative options being put forward by SAVE Britain’s Heritage campaign, supported by Cathedral. Creating an eye-catching crowd of Lady gaga lookalikes was seen as the perfect solution.

Dressed in minute Lady Gaga style costumes, with many in underwear and thigh high boots, the resultant herd of lookalikes brandishing brightly coloured placards marching across Westminster Bridge at 7am on a sunny morning definitely attracted attention from everyone passing by. Naturally there was lots of media coverage too – it made great visual images.

The Lady Gaga lookalikes march ended just outside Parliament, where their #SaveSmithfield placards were much in evidence.

This was a publicity stunt that made noise in every way! No one could ignore it!

The demonstration and SAVE Britain’s heritage proved successful. Smithfield Market was saved from demolition, and part of the restored building has now become the new home of the London Museum.
