Easter Activities and Trains

Getting out and about at Easter is always good fun, especially for families heading for a trip on one of Britain’s numerous heritage steam railways.

The magic of steam is irresistible to everyone, of all ages. The plumes of steam from the mighty locomotive engines, the iconic sounds and smells, the rattling carriages that are so much more roomy than modern ones, and the pleasure of watching the countryside gently drift by before disembarking at a country station to discover more about railway history.

At Easter, these railways take on a slightly different aspect. Children are often encouraged to take part in Easter egg hunts around the stations, or follow special treasure maps. There may be puzzles to solve, or visit the face painter to get some bunny whiskers and nose. Even more eye catching are the Easter bunnies who pop up to say hello.

Dressed in a full Easter bunny outfit, complete with floppy ears, big smile and white bunny tail, these Easter bunnies might even have an eye catching waistcoat adorned with carrots and other delicious vegetables. He might even be taking a ride himself, and getting up to mischief (or simply handing out eggs to eager children).

Other furry or fairy tale creatures have been known to pop up from time to time at these Easter steam eggstavaganzas. Down in Tunbridge Wells, visitors to the Spa Valley railway line have been greeted by Little Red Riding Hood herself. The only problem was that the Big Bad Wolf was also present, and intent on stopping her visiting Granny. Needing help to outsmart him, Little Red Riding Hood sought the help of children on the train. If successful, the Easter Bunny provided eggs at the next station (if they find him!).
