It’s Time To Take Pride!

It’s been over 25 years since the first Birmingham Pride event back in 1997 and over 50 years since the original Pride march took place in Trafalgar Square, London. On that day, hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals and their supporters bravely marched to protest and fight for their right to be treated equally and live their life openly without fear of persecution or discrimination. Thankfully, times and attitudes have changed since then, and annual Pride parades and events are now a regular fixture across the country.

What Does Birmingham Pride Do?

Apart from organizing the annual weekend festival, Birmingham Pride (as a non-profit organization), actively support and partner LGBTQ+ groups, charities and events in Birmingham and the West Midlands area to help raise money and awareness of the issues commonly faced by the community. These funds are used to empower, support and improve the lives of the local LGBTQ+ community.

What’s Happening?

The Pride Parade is one of the main highlights of the weekend with tens of thousands of people flocking to the area around Centenary Square from noon from where it makes its way through the heart of Birmingham city centre to the LGBTQ+ Village. Think carnival like atmosphere with fantastic, elaborate floats, dancers and stiltwalkers entertaining the huge crowds. It’s free to attend, a vibrant, colourful event that’s definitely not to be missed! In addition to the parade there are numerous events running on various stages and locations around the Pride Village on Hurst Street with the new Smithfield Live event area hosting the cabaret stage, dance arena along with a variety of street food vans to keep the party goers well fueled!
