It’s a great decision, hiring people that engage with customers at exhibitions for a living is the right call. What could possibly go wrong? Well actually a lot could go wrong if you don’t hire the right people.

To make sure you hire the staff that are actually the right fit for your business, learn from the mistakes other companies have made in the past so you don’t do the same!

Error number 1 – Don’t leave it until the last minute to hire promotional staff

To give an agency a fighting chance to meet your needs you need to give them a bit of lead time so they can match the staff you hire to the skills you want them to have. The staff will need to understand their duties and your expectations of them not to mention learn a bit about your company and what it does.

If you leave it to the last minute then the best staff may have already been booked with another client so you could have missed out on an absolute superstar. You want the staff to have enough time to learn about your product (or service) so that they really hit the ground running.

Error number 2 – Choosing an agency that appears the cheapest

Of course it’s a good idea to have a shop around and get quotes from a couple of promotional staffing agencies. But be warned, cheapest is often far from being the best.

The whole point in hiring extra help is to get more sales and/or better brand awareness. Its simple maths really, if an agency is quoting you a super low rate, how much are they paying the promotional staff that will be working for and representing you? If they are paying them peanuts do you really think they will be motivated or even the slightest bit interested? When you select an agency to work with the price should not be your motivating factor. Paying a cheap rate might save you money now, but it could cost you in the long run.

Error number 3 – Failing to communicate with the promotional staffing agency.

An agency worth its salt and with good pedigree will have no problem letting you choose your promotional staff. Explain to the agency that its important you view profiles, peruse over past experience or maybe even talk to the staff.

Explain in detail to the agency the type of staff you want and what skills they need to have so they can hand pick who they feel would be a perfect fit for you.

Ask questions about how the agency recruit the staff, how they decide who is right. Just because an agency has 40,000 promotional staff it does not mean they have any idea if they are any good or if they have ever actually worked in the industry before.

Error number 4 – Hiring staff just because they look good.

First impressions are important but it’s not everything in the promotional staffing word. The staff you hire must have the personality to not only promote your products but also get on with the rest of your team.

Ability to communicate, reliability, punctuality, experience and a get up and on it are incredibly valuable assets if you are a promotional person. The best way to find out if they are right for you is to look past the appearance and talk to them.
